A digital camera is a camera that captures an image in digital pixels. Instead of using film, digital cameras use memory cards to hold images. The amount of images a memory card can hold is determined by the size of the memory card. Many amateur and professional photographers are now using digital cameras because digital cameras have the ability to view an image on the camera’s small screen located on the back of the camera. There is no need to wait for the film to develop to see if you got the right shot! If the photographer doesn’t like the photo, the picture can be deleted, which means photographers don’t have to worry about wasting film. Digital cameras are similar to film cameras. They range from basic point and shoot digital cameras to the more advanced digital SLR cameras. Some of the features of digital cameras include a flash which can be turned on and off, a zoom lens, and image stabilization which produces clearer photos by reducing the shake or movement from the photographer’s hands. Consumers can find digital camera reviews in magazines like Consumer Reports and PC Magazine. To print or share photos from digital cameras, the cameras are simply connected to computers where they can be uploaded to the user's hard drive. There are many software programs available for digital photography. Software such as Adobe Photoshop allows the user to edit and change photographs taken with digital cameras. These programs include many editing features; such as cropping, color touch-up and red eye reduction. They allow amateur photographers to take professional looking photos with their digital cameras. Lightweight and easy to use and portable, digital cameras are popular at sporting events and concerts.
