Gadgets are small gifts and devices that are usually portable and use advanced technology. Gadgets are also called geek gifts and geek toys because people who are into technology (geeks) are usually the first to own electronic gadgets. These gadgets range from cell phone accessories, portable mp3 players, electronic letter openers, calculators and cameras. Gadgets are usually made in countries like China, Korea, Indonesia and Taiwan. Gadget gifts are popular at Christmas because they make good stocking stuffers for their small size and low prices. Though buyer beware not all gadgets are created equal and not all gadgets are sold at a low price. As geek culture goes further mainstream, more and more gadgetry is on the market. Technological advances in robotics can make for some pretty expensive toys. Gadgets are also popular at office gift exchanges as many of the inexpensive devices can be used as business tools, such as electronic pens, clocks and even desktop air conditioners. Gadgets are popular with high school and college students who use the portable devices as distractions from class. Many gadgets are available for purchase online, but are also on the shelves of most stores that carry gifts and toys. Most gadgets are powered by batteries and are made of plastic.

Early gadgets include hand-held video games, portable cassette players known as the Walkman, and calculator watches. Many older adults collect early gadgets out of nostalgia for the time when they were a kid. Wired Magazine and Consumer Reports are two publications that review gadgets.
