Mold in homes is usually the result of water damage, from flooding, leaking pipes, or a leaky roof. These sources of water which aids in mold growth in hidden and hard to see areas should be taken care of as quickly as possible. The most common locations of black mold infestations are basements, bathrooms and attics.
Black mold, or Strachybotrys chartarum, has been shown to be closely linked to respiratory bleeding, asthma and bronchitis. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports that black mold is a contributor to many lung disorders. Black mold is often found in drywall that has been flooded, but can also be found on structural wood, such as ceiling joists and rafters which comes from leaky roofs.
Mold removal, also know as mold remediation, can be done by the homeowner, often using a bleach solution. Often times removal of household mold is best left to professionals, due to the risk of airborne contaminants if the job is not done properly.
