… In China there would be many heirs to Lee’s throne, including Jackie Chan and Jet Li. Lee’s influence in America was evident in Chuck Norris, David Carradine and Steven Seagal, and in Europe with the likes of Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren. A movie phenomenon called “Bruceploitation” even started after Lee’s death in which Chinese filmmakers hired Bruce Lee look-alikes to cash in on the star’s passing. Jackie Chan’s career, for one, took off a few years after Lee’s death. Beginning as a stuntman, Lee later starred in the comedic kung fu movies Drunken Master, Half a Loaf of Kung Fu, and others. He later made more comedic kung fu movies for Hollywood, including Shanghai Noon, Shanghai Knights, and the Rush Hour series. Still, older Jackie Chan DVDs continue to be widely popular. The kung fu movie genre continued into the 20th century with the likes of Jet Li starring in The One and War. Comedies such as Steve Oedekerk’s 2002 spoof Kung Pow! Enter the First and Stephen Chow’s 2005 hit Kung Fu Hustle were massive successes. DreamWorks had a critical and box office monster on their hands in 2008 with the animated film Kung Fu Panda, and a film version of the 70s kung fu television series Kung Fu hit theaters in 2009. Another huge trend in the turn-of-the-century kung fu movie was the wuxia picture. Blending martial arts with fantasy, Ang Lee’s 2000 hit Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon set the stage for Hero, House of Flying Daggers, The Forbidden Kingdom, and others. Many years after Bruce Lee’s untimely death, via parodies, fantasy and classic kung fu DVDs, the kung fu movie continues to thrill audiences.
