…Nobody knows who is going to win the award until the envelope is opened on stage. Originally the Academy Awards was opened to the public, and cost $5 dollars a ticket to get in. Now the Oscars is a closed event, which is by invitation only.

The annual Academy Awards presentation started in 1929. Since that time it has grown to become one of the most anticipated events of the year. Every year movie professionals and movie goers alike watch the awards presentation. Oscar winners receive a statue made of gold-plated britannium. It is modeled after a Mexican actor named Emilio Fernandez. It is still debated where the name "Oscar" came from, but the award has been called by that name since 1932. Oscars are awarded in nine categories, including production, acting, technical production, and music. These categories are then broken down into the titles we associate with the Oscars. Actors, directors, and producers receive awards in categories like "Best Lead Actor" and "Best Director". The most recent category was added in 2001, and it is the award for "Best Animated Feature". One of the most prestigious awards is given for best movie, or best picture. Movies like Titanic, No Country for Old Men, and The Departed have all received the Academy Award for best picture.
