Hip Hop music is the collaboration of strong, heavy beats with rapping, or speaking in rhymes and rhythms. Hip hop is the new dance music of the 21st century, and the music has strong cultural ties across the globe. Rap is a more commonly used term for the genre. The lyrics of hip hop are extremely controversial, often involving sex, drugs, and violence. Particularly defiant lyrics are found in a sub-genre called gansta rap. Hip hop can trace its origins far back to African tribal music. This music had the common trait of strong rhythms and dance. Once this music was brought to America, chantings were used by slaves on plantations, during the work day. The chantings had soulful tunes and powerful words. Jazz later emerged in the 20th century, still following the tradition of rhythmic dance music. Once hip hop took shape, it used both the traditional beats, and the former use of rhythmic chanting. Though it emerged as African American music, with roots founded in Africa, the music is equally loved by Caucasians today. The hip hop culture is one of vibrancy and riches. Hip hop jewelry is flashy and portrays wealth, including gold chains, gold teeth, and the eccentric watch of Flavor Flav. Mary J. Blige taught the world that women can rap too, and brought her own flavor to the radio. Though hip hop is in the midst of its glory years, it first was heard in the seventies. The Last Poets and Jalal Mansur Nuriddin echoed the voice of their West African forefathers, the nomadic poets and singers called griots. The griots were an African version of the European troubadours, and the hip hop of the seventies reflected tradition, while simultaneously affecting the minds of many youths during the Civil Rights Movement.
