An important part of life is finding quality forms of recreation, or in other words: ways to have fun. Recreational activities serve as a form of refreshment to one's body and mind, allowing individuals a chance to do something interesting or different and thus break the monotony of daily work schedules and errands.
Often, individuals or families will go on trips or vacations in search of recreation. These trips prove beneficial to the health of family units by allowing inter-personal relationships to strengthen through shared experiences.
Increasingly, citizens of the world's more industrialized nations find that being proactive about recreation improves their quality of life. Many governments have in turn encouraged recreation in their citizens by creating parks, community centers, sporting leagues, community parades and festivals; in addition to other recreational areas and events. The monetary cost of such developments, it is reasoned, is worth the additional productivity of the citizens for whom it is intended to serve.
Private investors also create centers for recreation aiming for financial gain. One way entrepreneurs generate income from recreation is via theme or amusement parks. Famous examples of theme parks in the United States are Disneyland and Disneyworld, Sea World, Busch Gardens and Kennywood Park. Sports are another area of recreation which has created a flourishing industry. Sports complexes are found in many communities offering people a place to play organized sports such as ice hockey, basketball, racquetball and tennis, among others.
Professional franchises have also turned sports that used to be used solely for recreation into multi-billion dollar industries. The first example of this phenomenon in the United States was the rise of Major League Baseball in the 19th century. Baseball slowly evolved from a game primarily played for recreational purposes. Now it has become a part of society from which professional athletes make multiple millions of dollars.
People also make a living by taking on recreation as a profession. Many universities offer degrees in recreation management. These jobs range from managing local community parks to larger wildlife sanctuaries such as Yellowstone National Park with the hospitality industry their on the sidelines to house and feed vacation recreation seekers.
