Traditionally used as a means of providing food, fishing has become not only a leisure activity, but also a professional sport.
Fishing is an ancient practice that has been used for centuries to supply food to large quantities of people. Traditional methods of fishing involved the use of spears, traps, nets, and most commonly for today's leisure fishing: a fishing pole or rod.…
Early fishing poles were very basic. The poles were crafted out of bamboo or wood, and a fishing pole was created by simply attaching a string and hook. Modern fishing gear has evolved quite dramatically from that pole and string. A contemporary fishing rod is generally made of fiberglass or carbon fiber and includes a synthetic fishing line concealed within a reel. There are a number of fishing methods that offer participants new challenges. Fly fishing for example, has a difficult casting technique that takes hours of practice to master. Anglers must also learn a great deal about the fish they hope to catch. Bass fishing requires knowledge of which types of bait attract will invite a nibble; as well as, the general movement patterns of those fish. The introduction of professional fishing competitions has increased the desire to catch not only more fish, but to catch a large variety of fish. Professional fishing has evolved to look almost like NASCAR racing, with team sponsors, team jerseys, and million dollar purses.
The rising interest in professional fishing has resulted in countless television programs dedicated solely to educating the masses about fishing gear, techniques, and destinations. In fact, there is even a 24-hour cable channel called The World Fishing Network. The channel has updates on fishing events, advice from experts, contests, games, and videos. It highlights the results of tournaments and even promotes, believe it or not, national team fishing. Many nations of the world have national fishing teams, including youth teams. National teams travel all over the world to compete in fly fishing and other fishing events.
