The term society can also be used to explain the complex mixture or culture, language, religion, institutions and other factors that groups of people living in a designated area share. Also, the word can encompass microcosms of individuals living within larger groups of people who somehow distinguish themselves in some unique way. For example, 'Muslim-Americans' can be a unique society within the broader society of the Untied States.
Related to society, sociology is defined as the scientific study of the ways that societies act, both intentionally and subconsciously, to influence human behavior. From birth, infants learn from their parents and caretakers to interact with the world around them. They are taught language, bathroom etiquette, what to eat and a host of other values and necessary actions to make them essentially 'human' to the people around them.
Humans are unique in the animal kingdom. Born very prematurely in terms of development, human babies are helpless at birth. Without nurturing from other people, infants could not feed or protect themselves, let alone learn the skills necessary to walk and talk. Society serves the function of handing down, from generation to generation, a set of values and communications that act as the cornerstone of this educational process. This ensures that, as they mature, people are able to interact with the people living around them who share the same community.
People have always lived in groups. The earliest humans lived in small familial bands, yet still created a society of hunter-gatherers. Societies grew to encompass agriculture and later industrialization; art, music and other cultural elements became key components of differentiating between societies.
